How much does a tattoo hurt?

Probably one of the most frequently asked questions a tattoo artist gets

If you are new to the inking scene but have been pondering for a while to get a tattoo, this is perhaps one of your top concerns: will it hurt much? And to be honest…the simple, ambiguous and straight-forward answer is: it depends! Everyone has a different pain threshold, so what one person might consider as not painful, the same could be awfully painful to another.

Places that hurt the most

The level of pain can also depend on the area of the body where you want to place the tattoo, since some body parts are more sensible than others. The thinner the skin, the closer it is to the bone and nerve endings, and the frequency of movement of an area determines how painful a tattoo will be.

These are the body placements commonly known to be the most painful (in no particular order): face, neck, hands, feet, rib cage, front and back of knees, groin, ankle, spine, elbows, stomach, inside and back of thighs.

The feeling of the needle is also different for everyone: some describe it as a hot scratch and other people say it is annoying. But the good news is that most people walk out saying it was not nearly as bad as they feared! Usually, the first minute on the chair is the worst, then you realize it’s not as bad as you imagined and get to relax and enjoy the ride!
