Popular tattoo styles: Black & Grey tattoos

Angel tattoo

A style that requires the artist to have advanced and subtle shading techniques

Black & Grey tattoos are thought to have originated in prison in the 1970s and 1980s, and later became a popular choice in tattoo shops. It uses black ink diluted with distilled water in varying proportions, as to create a “wash” look and lighter shades. Also, black and white ink can be mixed to create the Gray color, producing a thicker but brighter result which requires a slower application. The white ink may also be used to smooth out sharp transitions between different shades, or to highlight some details.

Basically any design can be done in this color, but some of the most popular themes inked in Black and Grey are: skulls, realistic portraits, animals, money, religious, guns and knives. Realism and Portrait tattoos are made using a style within the Black & Grey known as fine-line.
