One of the most important steps of getting a tattoo is its aftercare. It is essential you pay attention to your tattoo artist’s recommendations and follow some simple rules of thumb. People can sometimes be oblivious and not realize that you can damage a tattoo, and then that marking you got for life can be ruined. Instead of lamenting, we advise you take the needed precautions and take care of your new tattoo. Here are some great aftercare tips for your new tattoo.

Keep it clean

One of the first things to keep in mind is that you have an open wound and that you need to treat as such. Leave your bandage on for the first hour or so. Then, rinse it and wash it with antibacterial soap. Pat dry, don’t rub a towel against it. Scratching can bring bacterias that are under your fingernails into the open wound.

Product application

After you have washed the area, apply a tattoo healing ointment and rub in well. This has to be done for the first 3 to 5 days, and 2 to 4 times a day. Once the tattoo has healed and has peeled out, apply an unscented dye-free lotion instead of ointment 1 to 3 times a day for about 2 weeks. The ointment and lotion will keep the area moist, which helps the healing process.

Donts

  • Don’t go into a pool, hot tub or lake during the healing process. It’s easy to get an infection into an open wound from bodies of water.
  • Don’t go sun tanning or to the beach. UV rays can damage the ink and fade colors away easily.
  • Don’t scratch or play with your tattoo.

Most important tip: follow your tattoo artist’s recommendations and instructions!
