Jason Drager – Artist Spotlight Mantra Tattoo

We’d like to continue our artist spotlight by taking a deep dive into tattoos created by Jason Drager. Jason is a talented, versatile artist that specializes in Traditional, Neo-Traditional, Japanese and nature themed tattoos. He has been tattooing for more than a couple of decades and that combination of experience and dedication to his craft makes him one hell of a tattooer! Not only is he well seasoned, Jasons attention to detail, innate understanding of design and his dynamic use of color allows his work to stand out in a sea of tattooers.

Let’s take a look at some of his more recent work!

This first piece is a full backpiece picturing a classic Japanese Oni Demon done in a more neo-traditional style. Oni demons are a kind of yōkai, ogre, or troll in Japanese folklore.  They are ferocious demons, bringers of disaster, spreaders of disease, and punishers of the damned in Hell.

This next piece is another classic image in Japanese culture. The Haynna mask is a mask used in Noh theater, representing a jealous female demon. It possesses two sharp bull-like horns, metallic eyes, and a leering mouth. The Hannya mask is said to be demonic and dangerous but also sorrowful and tormented, displaying the complexity of human emotions. When the actor looks straight ahead, the mask appears frightening and angry; when tilted slightly down, the face of the demon appears to be sorrowful, as though crying. Some of the most classic imagery in tattooing have always been skulls and roses. This design by Jason showcases his talent for employing contrast and composition, making a striking tattoo that anyone would be proud to wear!

Another favorite subject matter of Jasons are those with nature and animal themes. This next tattoo showcases a viper in conjunction with leaves. The muted natural color of the tattoo brings a sense of realness to this illustrated neo-traditional style rib tattoo. Notice how the design fits the location on the body beautifully!
