Chris Yaws – Artist Spotlight Mantra Tattoo
Next up, we’d like to feature another one of our longest standing tattooers here at Mantra Tattoo, Chris Yaws.
Chris has been tattooing for 24 years. He is predominantly a self taught tattooer.
He got his start when he met his best friend, Jason, while serving in the Air Force who introduced me to his family friend and tattooer, Randy Simonsmeier. While visiting us in Tucson, Arizona where we were stationed, Randy was persuaded to let him tattoo himself after giving him a one night crash course in the mechanics of tattooing. Following his first introduction to tattooing, Randy vouched for him to be able to purchase from tattoo suppliers so that he could buy his own equipment. He started tattooing any friends and co-workers that would allow it until he was discharged, honorably. He started working in Boulder, CO in 1998, in Denver in 1999 and Lakewood in 2006.
Chris’ style of tattooing is comprehensive. There is not really anything he can’t or won’t tattoo, stylistically. He is influenced and inspired by all the things. As Chris would say, “Some things are cool and some things suck. I like most cool things. Sometimes cool things suck, too, though. That’s what is beautiful about art. It’s all subjective. I’m inspired by making people happy by drawing pictures on them.”
Chris’ only desire for the future of tattooing is that he is to be able to keep tattooing until he physically cannot anymore.
It is his life’s passion. That and building custom motorcycles.
