From  voluntary to State imposed quarantines, the financial stresses of job loss, sickness of loved ones and shortages of supplies. When it’s time to get tattooed, there is no doubt there is some ritual surrounding the preparation before hand, which helps remind us to take care of ourselves and put one’s own well being back into prime focus. It’s always advisable to be well rested, well hydrated and well fed in order to allow your body it’s best chance at handling the situation. It’s also a well known fact that when you’re getting tattooed, your body releases adrenaline. Adrenaline triggers the fight-or-flight response and this reaction causes air passages to dilate which provides muscles with the oxygen they need. The body’s ability to feel pain decreases as well. Endorphins are also released during the tattoo process, which results in a natural high. Some other times that endorphins are released are during vigorous exercise and during an orgasm. No wonder so many people love to come back for more and more tattoos!

Tattoos have also been found to reduce cortisol levels according to the American Journal of Human Biology. This improves the immune system and also helps provide stress reduction, enabling tattoos for depression and anxiety to possibly be useful.
